The bird showed well at times which allowed for a few record shots through the scope. However when the bird wasn't on view I was scanning the reservoir and stumbled across a hybrid American x Eurasian Wigeon. By the looks of it, its the same bird that was seen last year and the year before on the Lizard. Though not a true American Wigeon, its probably even rarer because the two species have to meet. still its probably my best find to date.<br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><div>Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,</div><div></div><div>Greg.</div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; Over the past 2 years we had to complete 3 modules the first was Identity so we had to relate stuff to ourselves (hence the self portrait of me playing my guitar), the second was metamorphosis (which explains the picture of Liam Gallagher turning into a cheetah... yeah I don't know either!) and the third and final was a choice between lots of different topics such as jewellery, masks light and dark and so on..........</div><div align="center"></div><div align="center"></div><div align="center"></div><div align="center">I kept trying to look for an excuse to draw birds, so after seeing a documentary on Birds of Paradise and the tribes people of Papua New Guinea I thought I would link that to the jewellery topic. My art teacher didn't really understand the idea but then she did think Papua New Guinea was in Africa! But the I did get a couple months painting birds in between lessons of further Chemistry, Physics and Maths which was good.</div><div align="center"></div><div align="center"></div><div align="center"></div><div align="center">The red bird with the green tail is a King Bird of Paradise and there is also some studies of a Peregrine Falcon.</div><div align="center"></div><div align="center"></div><div align="center"></div><div align="center">If your wondering why there are Birds on the Tribesman's head its because I thought it would be more fun painting birds rather than just the feathers in the final 10 hour exam and trust me it starts to get a bit boring and depressing after the first 2 hours because your being held there against your will and your no longer doing it for fun, which and the end of the day is what its all about. The big yellow and brown birds are Lesser Birds of Paradise.</div><div align="center"></div><div align="center"></div><div align="center"></div><div align="center">Anyway hope you like them. </div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Greg Willshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11107779975064680184noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-127548883823190507.post-75138984999593872402010-06-06T13:43:00.000-07:002010-06-09T11:21:47.414-07:00King of the River<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/TAwL6uLuoiI/AAAAAAAAASE/atFd-kQ62JY/s1600/8O0Z0006+-+Copy.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 278px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479767950060593698" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/TAwL6uLuoiI/AAAAAAAAASE/atFd-kQ62JY/s400/8O0Z0006+-+Copy.JPG" /></a><br /><div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/TAwL6dJpTXI/AAAAAAAAAR8/jEEjxM2RvW8/s1600/stacked+king+(2).JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 266px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479767945488452978" border="0" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/TAwL6dJpTXI/AAAAAAAAAR8/jEEjxM2RvW8/s400/stacked+king+(2).JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/TAwL59760vI/AAAAAAAAAR0/aOPlubDbzbs/s1600/stacked+king.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 267px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479767937109381874" border="0" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/TAwL59760vI/AAAAAAAAAR0/aOPlubDbzbs/s400/stacked+king.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div>I mentioned in an earlier post that i was going to photograph kingfishers properly at some point this year, and with the help of Dave Scott (a very talented painter and photographer links below) I've finally been able to. There are many other things that I've seen but have no pictorial evidence for but at least I know I've seen them, such as Hoopoe, Gyr Falcon, Short-eared Owl, Little Crake, Waxwing and much more that I can't remember!</div><br /><div>There is also those occasions when you get a unique experience that you didn't expect to happen. Two winters ago (or something like that) there was a Minke Whale that was swimming only 10 metres or so of shore from Swanpool and the day of the 2007 Rugby world cup final me and a couple mates had a day trip to the Ilse of Scilly and saw big rarities like Blackpoll warbler and on the way home on the Scillonian we were accompanied by 60+ Common Dolphin! It would have been even better if England had won!</div><br /><div>But as always there are a few that you miss and you kick yourself for not seeing them like the Alder Flycatcher and Red-Flanked Bluetail. Anyway back to some photographs sorry for the long post but I don't expect to upload anything for a while as exams start soon and I'm absolutely dreading it!</div><br /><div>Might see you all out and about sometime,</div><br /><div>Greg.</div><div> </div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Greg Willshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11107779975064680184noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-127548883823190507.post-8779823714758462842010-01-10T13:09:00.000-08:002010-01-10T14:09:59.371-08:00Snow Stops Play<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/S0pIjytDGwI/AAAAAAAAAPc/vLModJmSQcQ/s1600-h/Copy+of+IMG_3886.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 374px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425228480864525058" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/S0pIjytDGwI/AAAAAAAAAPc/vLModJmSQcQ/s400/Copy+of+IMG_3886.JPG" /></a><br /><div><br /><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 267px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425222542816474946" border="0" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/S0pDKJwEd0I/AAAAAAAAAPU/uQYH0ipPjPQ/s400/Copy+of+redwing+(8).JPG" /></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div></div><div> </div><div></div><div></div><div> </div><div></div><div></div><div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 237px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425222538164529330" border="0" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/S0pDJ4a9aLI/AAAAAAAAAPM/5YyryO5iOiA/s400/Copy+of+redwing+(2).JPG" /></div><div> </div><div> </div><div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 295px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425222533817159138" border="0" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/S0pDJoOdzeI/AAAAAAAAAPE/TBqIbVsWh6o/s400/Copy+of+redwing+(11).JPG" /></div><div> </div><div> </div><div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 267px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425222527659088610" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/S0pDJRSRGuI/AAAAAAAAAO0/94Hp2a267-A/s400/Copy+of+robin.JPG" /></div><div> </div><div> </div><div>Like everywhere Falmouth has received its fair share of snow and as a result there was no way out this morning. However also like the rest of the county there are hundreds of Thrushes flying around, mostly Redwing along with the odd Song Thrush and Feildfare. The Feildfare is now bird 99 on my local list of birds seen in walking distance from my house. Birding in Falmouth can be quite productive at times. This time last year I saw my first and so far only Waxing eating berries when walking back from school. Other birds that I've seen in Falmouth over the years also include Surf Scoter, Laughing Gull, Black Guillemot, Red Kite, Iceland Gull, Black Redstart and Merlin. Today wasn't that good but there was still 10+ med gull on Swanpool and lots of Blackcap in the garden. Feildfare were seen and heard throughout the day and around 50 Redwing feeding next door before being chased off by the local male Sparrowhawk. </div></div>Greg Willshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11107779975064680184noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-127548883823190507.post-19939375113819041222010-01-05T09:16:00.000-08:002010-01-06T08:34:52.227-08:00Purple Portfolio<div align="center"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/S0N0ys2VrJI/AAAAAAAAAOA/D9ROuiY26nk/s1600-h/Copy+of+purple+sandpiper+(42).JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 242px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423306790665563282" border="0" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/S0N0ys2VrJI/AAAAAAAAAOA/D9ROuiY26nk/s400/Copy+of+purple+sandpiper+(42).JPG" /></a> I like the colours in the image above and the lighting. Despite probable being my favourite bird this is my only picture of a kingfisher that I've taken (and it isn't great), but I hope to improve on this in the next few months. My camera normally uses shutter speeds between 30 secs and 1/4000 secs, but for this picture I used the bulb function for the first time and exposed it for just over 7 minutes. This blurred the stars as the Earth rotates. Next time I've got to find something more <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">interesting</span> for the foreground rather than houses!<br /><div></div>Greg Willshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11107779975064680184noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-127548883823190507.post-35563508651493606552010-01-01T06:54:00.000-08:002010-01-02T05:24:59.798-08:00At Last, an Otter!<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/Sz4TAVQZaTI/AAAAAAAAAJY/AW_LqR8LLX4/s1600-h/Copy+of+mink.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 267px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5421791897827502386" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/Sz4TAVQZaTI/AAAAAAAAAJY/AW_LqR8LLX4/s400/Copy+of+mink.JPG" /></a><br /><div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/Sz4QyIlmWmI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/mQzDQafjqjc/s1600-h/Copy+of+otter+(2).JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 218px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5421789454885345890" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/Sz4QyIlmWmI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/mQzDQafjqjc/s400/Copy+of+otter+(2).JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/Sz4Qx31As4I/AAAAAAAAAJI/-JG0JO9eO-Y/s1600-h/resize+pic+(29).JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 267px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5421789450386584450" border="0" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/Sz4Qx31As4I/AAAAAAAAAJI/-JG0JO9eO-Y/s400/resize+pic+(29).JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div>I've waited along time but at last I've managed to see an Otter! Every time I have gone looking for one I always come close but always stumble across something else. When I went to France a few summers ago, an English holiday maker was fishing at the edge of a small lake and tolled me there was Otter in the reeds about five minutes before I got there (always like it!). However after an hour what I thought at first thought was an otter turned out to be a Coypu. Then the next year I went back and photographed two adults with three cubs! Then back in Cornwall I saw a Mink at Drift Reservoir. I've read in the log book that people have seen Otters here but were they in fact Mink or there Otters there as well? As I found out in Scotland they can happily live along side each other. In Tobermory there is a very tame Otter which can be seen regularly (I didn't see it or any other Otter in Scotland) the closest I came to was again a Mink. But back in Cornwall, there it was an Otter and on the way back from the county boarder, I stopped of at Porth Reservoir to see the Drake Ring-necked Duck. All in all a good days work and well worth the early start and a brilliant way to end 2009! </div><br /><div></div><br /><div><strong>By the way Happy New Year to every one!</strong></div><div></div><div>Top image is the Mink at Drift.</div><div></div><div>Middle image is the Otter in Cornwall (record shot).</div><div></div><div>Bottom image is the Coypu in France.</div></div></div>Greg Willshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11107779975064680184noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-127548883823190507.post-48967489408265985842009-12-28T09:47:00.000-08:002009-12-28T10:10:08.029-08:00Where it all Started<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/SzjwCqeIRCI/AAAAAAAAAFE/DovP0fwNgYs/s1600-h/digiscope+(3).JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420346080091456546" border="0" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/SzjwCqeIRCI/AAAAAAAAAFE/DovP0fwNgYs/s400/digiscope+(3).JPG" /></a><br /><div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/SzjwCUm3f-I/AAAAAAAAAE8/6sB7m2wKXpY/s1600-h/digiscope+(2).JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 269px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420346074222526434" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/SzjwCUm3f-I/AAAAAAAAAE8/6sB7m2wKXpY/s400/digiscope+(2).JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/SzjwCOyH-7I/AAAAAAAAAE0/k0Z1gzohm_g/s1600-h/digiscope.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 238px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420346072659131314" border="0" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/SzjwCOyH-7I/AAAAAAAAAE0/k0Z1gzohm_g/s400/digiscope.JPG" /></a> These are the first ever good photographs that I ever took, back in the days of "Digiscoping" When I used my Opticron scope and Nikon Coolpix. The Tree Sparrow is still one of my favourite photographs even though its a bit noisy. The Stonechat chick was taken at Marazion Marsh and the White-billed Diver was taken at Hayle estuary where it wintered in 2007.<br /><br /><div></div></div></div>Greg Willshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11107779975064680184noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-127548883823190507.post-13348858676433506852009-12-18T09:00:00.000-08:002009-12-18T09:16:43.797-08:00Veolia Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2009<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/Syu1mVAoXhI/AAAAAAAAADs/ZZBR1nB_7cg/s1600-h/Copy+of+rock+pipit.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416622646922599954" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/Syu1mVAoXhI/AAAAAAAAADs/ZZBR1nB_7cg/s400/Copy+of+rock+pipit.jpg" /></a><br /><div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/Syu1mVO694I/AAAAAAAAADk/VYe6R3HzllI/s1600-h/GregWills.catc.SnowyOwl.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 204px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416622646982539138" border="0" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fAZORW6Uam8/Syu1mVO694I/AAAAAAAAADk/VYe6R3HzllI/s400/GregWills.catc.SnowyOwl.JPG" /></a><br />These pictures got to the Final round of judging in International Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2009, but unfortunately no further. Getting highly commended or possibly further is one of my personal aims and is one I would love to achieve, but I feel there is along way to go yet. The Rock Pipit was fly catching at Jubilee Pool and the Snowy Owl was taken in February at <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error">Zennor</span>. The snowy owl was probably one of the best birds I have ever scene and we were incredible lucky to stumble across when walking back to the car. It was quite happy to sit around about 60 yards away for an hour or so.
